The underlying layer of SHARK WANK – its micro- and macrostructures – is derived from the estimated carbon emissions (tCO₂e/year) of the Twitter account of the main narrator, who had 146.8 million followers as of July 2023. The narrator’s mantra, the semantization and the core of this piece, is taken from his viral January 2020 speech, interwoven with samples of his other sentences, arguments, ideas, and so on, as well as those of his friends; perhaps the pop queens can eventually deliver it all from evil. Lastly, the title of the piece refers both to the composer’s sincere appreciation of Damien Hirst’s The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living and to a sarcastic play on the narrator’s self-proclaimed business savvy and the television program.
