ABSTRACT
As in many European cities, carnival demonstrations in Évora occupied squares and streets, organized in a comical fashion and neutralizing rules and moral manners. The negotiation of civilizing rules in the 19th century was apparent in the Portuguese south-center city, with the developed account of a distinguished and equal society striving for approximation to culture centers, while equally regulating excesses. Carnival celebrations on the streets were the most sought after, alongside a rise in sociability Balls and Parties regulated and integrative of the «best society», particularly in Theatres and Ballrooms. This study aims to: (a) analyze and articulate popular sociability dynamics in the 19th century and corresponding occupation of the city’s soundscape during Carnival; (b) undertake a survey of events and repertoires; (c) place Masked Balls among the various programs of Évora’s Theatres; (d) dwell on the «civilizing» narrative regarding Évora’s Carnival celebrations.
