O AMANHÃ NÃO ESTÁ À VENDA [TOMORROW ISN’T FOR SALE] is one of the first in a series of works under the designation Synthetic Soundscapes, which develop and apply cryptographic and sonification processes to generate musical material with a direct and intrinsic connection to an extramusical event or phenomenon.

There are around eleven quotes from Jair Bolsonaro during the COVID-19 pandemic at the cryptographic core of this piece, along with numeric series after the deaths recorded at the time each quote was made.

• April 20, 2020 – “Eu não sou coveiro” [“I’m not a gravedigger”] – 2,584 deaths.
• April 28, 2020 – “E daí, lamento. Quer que eu faça o que?” [“So what? I’m sorry. What do you want me to do?”] – 5,050 deaths.
• June 2, 2020 – “A gente lamenta todos os mortos, mas é o destino de todo mundo” [“We mourn all the dead, but that’s everyone’s fate”] – 31,199 deaths.
• December 17, 2020 – “Se tomar vacina e virar jacaré não tenho nada a ver com isso” [“If you take the vaccine and turn into a crocodile, that’s not my problem”] – 184,827 deaths.
• March 4, 2021 – “Vai comprar vacina. Só se for na casa da sua mãe” [“Go buy a vaccine. Only if it’s at your mother’s house”] – 260,970 deaths.
• March 4, 2021 – “Chega de frescura e mimi” [“Enough with the fuss and whining”] – 260,970 deaths.
• May 17, 2021 – “Tem alguns idiotas que até hoje ficam em casa” [“There are some idiots who are still staying at home”] – 436,537 deaths.
• June 9, 2021 – “Nunca vi ninguém morrer por tomar hidroxicloroquina” [“I’ve never seen anyone die from taking hydroxychloroquine”] – 479,515 deaths.
• July 24, 2021 – “Se eu estivesse coordenando a pandemia não teria morrido tanta gente” [“If I had been coordinating the pandemic, not so many people would have died”] – 549,448 deaths.
• September 8, 2021 – “(Covid) apenas encurtou a vida delas por alguns dias ou algumas semanas” [“(Covid) only shortened their lives by a few days or weeks”] – 584,421 deaths.
• January 22, 2022 – “Lamento profundamente, mas é um número insignificante” [“I deeply regret it, but that’s an insignificant number”] – 622,801 deaths.

These sentences, along with the dates and the corresponding death tolls, were transposed into various musical parameters, through alphabetic matrices mapping letters to specific musical pitches, drawn from a set of scales, melodies, and/or short note cells. The sentences themselves – in their original, retrograde, and inverted forms – determine various temporal and structural aspects in the composition, as well as combinations, fragmentations, distributions, etc., according to the number and length of words, or the number and length of syllables.

Throughout the work, there are brief quotations of melodies, chords, harmonies, and other materials, thematically or ironically linked to the programmatic content. For instance, the (transposed) chord from Petrushka by Igor Stravinsky (a puppet, a doll), or part of a harmonic progression from Tom Jobim’s Insensatez. Lastly, the title is a direct reference to the book of the same name by Ailton Krenak, published in 2020.
